The story of Shawn Bayes and Home Medical Equipment
In January 1970, Shawn began his career in the medical industry by delivering oxygen to home care patients. Over the next few years, he earned promotions from delivery to management and then to the head of his department. By 1974, Shawn was determined to start his own medical equipment company and opened up his first store in Canton, Ohio. Within two years, his company had become instrumental in the medical industry with its successful distribution and use of oxygen concentrators.
With success flourishing in Ohio, Shawn moved to Florida in 1977 to open another medical company with locations in St. Petersburg, Clearwater, and Ft. Myers. By the early 1980’s, his Florida company was influencing the market in the development of custom wheelchairs specialized for pediatric needs. Today, Shawn’s brothers, who began their careers working in his stores, own the largest retail store specializing in pediatric wheelchairs in the Southeast United States.
In the mid 1980’s, Shawn started a division in his Ft. Myers location to build handicap accessible vans used to transport power custom wheelchairs. His skilled staff took full-sized van shells and lowered the floors, raised the doors, designed the interiors, and built and installed adaptive mobility equipment.
By this point in his career, Shawn’s success had grown to include six locations with over 100 employees. His organization was one of the founding members of the National Mobility Equipment Dealers’ Association (NMEDA) with memberships to the Ohio Association of Medical Equipment Services (OAMES), Florida State Association of FAMED, and the National Association of MED as well.
Today, Shawn focuses on selling converted handicap accessible vans from his retail location in Pinellas Park, Florida. He specializes in the mini-van market, promoting his private label rear-entry and side-entry vans built in his production facility in Pinellas Park, Florida.
